Overview

Need A Reader is the first marketplace app connecting actors with readers and acting coaches for auditions, self-tapes, classes, rehearsals, and practice sessions. The platform revolutionizes the acting industry by providing on-demand access to vetted talent while offering readers and coaches flexible earning opportunities. The app features a sophisticated VOIP system built with OpenTok that enables high-quality video calls between actors and readers regardless of geographical location. Actors can review potential readers' resumes, skill sets, personal ratings, and availability before hiring. The intuitive swipe-based interface allows actors to quickly browse profiles and send job invitations to up to 20 readers simultaneously, with the first to confirm getting the job. Key technical implementations include robust VOIP call handling that works reliably even from app-terminated states, automatic video rotation using Motion Manager even when device rotation is locked, and advanced recording capabilities for capturing audition sessions. The platform supports in-person meetups and remote self-taping options, location-based reader discovery with the ability to expand searches globally, and Stripe payment processing for secure transactions.
